Be So Good…
I’ve loved Steve Martin for ages. I recently rewatched “LA Story.” So genius! My sister recommended I read his book, “Born Standing Up.” I have yet to finish it, but even the first few chapters are amazing. I won’t ruin it for you, but I’ll tell you what it conjured up for me.
The reason why I love books and documentaries about successful people is that I realize, in a sense, they are just like me. Often we see someone’s success and think they have something we don’t or they achieved some kind of greatness because they were born with a certain ability or they were destined to succeed.
Success is just the end result of doing what you love with passion just because you love doing it. I continually watch movies like “Shut Up and Play the Hits” and read books like Tina Fey’s “Bossypants” because stories of people doing what they love and “making it” keep fueling that fire I have to be a writer.
For years I thought I didn’t know what I was passionate about. That was the lie I told myself because I had a voice inside my head that told me I wasn’t that good of a writer and why would anyone want to read something I wrote.
It’s so freeing to finally tell that voice in my head to shut the eff up. I’ve always been the type of person that doesn’t give a crap what other people think, but when it came to writing I was terrified. Somehow I felt naked and vulnerable with writing. I’d rather have a complete stranger read what I’ve written than someone who knows me. (Kind of like how you don’t want your neighbor or your best friend’s husband to be your gynecologist.)
I feel like I’m seeing the world and writing with fresh eyes. Pursuing something filled with passion because I love it and know in my heart that’s what I am meant to do is a very different place than writing and hoping people like it. Caring what other people think is so restrictive and drives people to do all kinds of crazy things (or more likely boring things because they try to hide their crazy).
So get naked, let it all hang out, and BE YOU!
